ABOUT

DR ANDRIES VAN NIEKERK

I am an Orthopaedic Surgeon who specialises in hip, knee, shoulder and hand surgery. My mission is to provide excellent orthopaedic-related care to my patients based on the best current evidence and at a standard of care that is internationally recognised. I completed my medical degree (MBChB) in 2008 at the University of Pretoria. I have always had a keen interest in the mechanical working of the human body and musculoskeletal system. The spectrum of orthopaedic pathology has always been my main interest while studying medicine.

After completing my community service years in Potchefstroom and Tembisa, I started studying specialist Orthopaedic Surgery in 2011 at the University of Pretoria.

During my specialist training, I gained experience working at Steve Biko Academic Hospital, Kalafong Hospital and 1 Military Hospital. I also performed numerous after-hours duties assisting in orthopaedic surgical cases in private hospitals around Pretoria to gain further experience.

I am grateful for having had great mentors in orthopaedic surgery who invested their time and knowledge in preparing me to become a skilled surgeon providing optimal patient care.

Orthopaedic surgery is a rewarding career, and it will always be a privilege for me to be able to positively influence and improve the quality of patients’ lives.

From starting in the womb during early life, movement is essential for the development of normal joints. By mastering the ability of the body to move, great talent gets developed. The ability to sprint and become the fastest on the planet, or the finesse of creating music by playing classical instruments, is dependent on the controlled movement of the body. Even daily activities like walking and brushing your teeth need body movement to achieve what we often take for granted. An injury or the ageing process can impair these abilities, sometimes with life-changing consequences.

Aiming to restore the ability to move and return to your best level of functioning remains the main goal of my practice.

Movement is life!
