HIP ANATOMY
What does the hip consist of?
The hip joint is one of the largest and most important joints in the human body. It is a ball-and-socket joint that connects the pelvis to the lower limb, allowing for stability, weight-bearing, and a wide range of movement.
The hip joint consists of bones, cartilage, ligaments, tendons, muscles, nerves, blood vessels, and soft tissue structures that work together to facilitate movement and maintain joint stability. The hip enables movements such as flexion, extension, abduction, adduction, rotation, and circumduction, all of which are essential for walking, running, sitting, and maintaining balance.
What bones form the hip joint?
The hip joint is formed by two main bones:
- The femur (thigh bone)
- The pelvis
The upper part of the femur forms the “ball” of the joint, known as the femoral head. This ball fits into a rounded socket in the pelvis called the acetabulum, creating the hip’s ball-and-socket structure.
The femur is the longest and strongest bone in the human body and plays an important role in weight-bearing and movement. The acetabulum forms part of the pelvis and provides stability to the joint while allowing smooth movement of the femoral head.
What is the function of cartilage in the hip?
The surfaces of the femoral head and acetabulum are covered with articular cartilage, a smooth protective tissue that reduces friction and allows the bones to glide easily during movement.
Articular cartilage also acts as a shock absorber, helping distribute forces across the joint during activities such as walking, running, and climbing stairs.

What ligaments support the hip?

What tendons and muscles support the hip?
The hip joint is surrounded by powerful muscles and tendons that allow movement and provide stability.
Hip muscles help control:
- Hip flexion and extension
- Abduction and adduction
- Internal and external rotation
- Balance and posture during movement
Tendons connect muscles to bones and assist in transferring force to move the joint efficiently. Together, the muscles and tendons of the hip support daily activities such as walking, running, standing, climbing stairs, and sitting.
What are bursae and what do they do?
Bursae are small fluid-filled sacs located around the hip joint. These structures reduce friction between bones, tendons, muscles, and soft tissues during movement.
The bursae help cushion the joint and prevent irritation that may occur when surrounding structures rub against each other.
Inflammation of the bursae may lead to hip pain and discomfort, commonly referred to as bursitis.
What is the synovial membrane and synovial fluid?
The hip joint is lined by a thin layer of connective tissue called the synovial membrane. This membrane produces synovial fluid, which lubricates the joint and helps reduce friction during movement.
- Synovial fluid helps nourish the cartilage and maintain smooth, pain-free movement within the hip joint.
- The synovial membrane surrounds the joint cavity, bursae, and tendon sheaths, helping protect and support the joint structures.
What movements does the hip joint allow?
The ball-and-socket design of the hip allows for a wide range of movement in multiple directions.
These movements include:
- Flexion and extension – moving the leg forward and backward
- Abduction and adduction – moving the leg away from and toward the body
- Internal and external rotation – rotating the leg inward and outward
- Circumduction – circular movement of the leg

Why is the hip important?
The hip joint plays a vital role in mobility, stability, and weight-bearing function. It supports the body during daily activities while allowing smooth and controlled movement of the lower limb.
Because the hip carries significant body weight and is involved in almost all lower-body movement, it is also susceptible to injuries and degenerative conditions such as osteoarthritis, labral tears, bursitis, and hip fractures.
